Zusammenfassung:
"What can a multi-genre approach to historiography contribute to political inquiry? Rather than issuing a manifesto, I want to inaugurate my response to the question by revisiting and rethinking two texts I analyze in earlier investigations. The first is featured in an analysis of the cultural mediation of political economy. Roughly three decades ago, after teaching a political theory seminar in which we explored relationships between culture and political economy, I searched for a text to engage to apply what we had learned. A remark by the French philosophical anthropologist Michel Serres, "What does one do at a feast if not exchange?" inspired a selection of Isaac Dinesen's (Karen Blixen's) novel Babette's Feast and the Gabriel Axel film adaptation of the story. My engagement with the lexical and film versions of the story eventuated in an essay, "Political Economy and Mimetic Desire in Babette's Feast," which begins with a commentary on the culture-political economy relationship, emphasizing how cultural commitments mediate economic exchanges. After noting that an economic sensibility militates in behalf of making things exchangeable while cultural norms tend to inhibit their exchangeability (as Igor Kopytoff puts it, culture is a "counterdrive" that inhibits the "potential onrush of commoditization" ), I set the scene of the story, borrowing from the summary on the back of the paperback version of Dinesen's novel:"-- Provided by publisher.
