Zusammenfassung:
Taeko and her loving husband Jiro live with six-year-old Keita, Taeko’s son from her previous marriage. When a tragic accident brings the boy’s father, Park, unexpectedly back into their lives, the harmony of the family dynamic is fundamentally disturbed. As ever in Fukada’s work, the themes of guilt, regret, attachment and empathy are sensitively examined, both as universal human emotions but also as particular qualities rooted in contemporary Japanese society. Never sentimental or overbearing, Fumino Kimura’s performance as the devastated yet strong-minded young mother is dazzling throughout. Atom Sunada as Park, a Korean-Japanese man who hasn’t fully adapted to Japanese society, adds further depth to the film, as Fukada expands this intimate character study to include pressing questions of xenophobia and cultural difference.
