In 1537, King JoaÌo III transferred the University of Lisbon to Coimbra, not without protests from the masters who taught there. Coimbra had a before and after that date: the installation of the University brought a resurgence to the city, with significant urban, demographic, social, economic and cultural transformations. In fact, this resurgence had begun with King Manuel and continued after 1537. When Rua da Sofia was opened, honourable houses began to be built on the western side in 1538; and on the eastern side, several university colleges were built from the 1540s onwards. In Alta, work began on the ColeÌgio de Jesus in 1547, the ColeÌgio de S. JeroÌnimo in 1565 and the ColeÌgio das Artes in 1568.
