Designed by J. P. Lee, the original Lee-Metford design was first adopted by the British Army in 1888. The Metford rifling was replaced with the Enfield rifling in 1895. In 1914, the British troops were still armed with the SMLE Mk.III version. During the war the basic Mk.III design was slightly simplified to cater for mass production requirements. Calibre: .303 British (7.7x56mm R). Manually operated, rotating bolt action. Overall length: 1132mm for the SMLE Mk.III and 1260mm for the Lee-Enfield MK.1. Barrel length: 640mm for the SMLE Mk.III and 767mm for the Lee-Enfield MK.1. Weight: 3.96kg for the SMLE Mk.III and 4.19kg for the Lee-Enfield MK.1. Effective range: 500m. Maximum range: 2700m.
