English Short Title Catalog, T154572. - Reproduction of original from British Library. - The enlarged edition of 'Principal navigations' by Richard Hakluyt was published 1598-1600 in three volumes (STC 12626). Vol. 1 was published in 1598 and included on the titlepage "the famous victorie atchieved at the citie of Cadiz 1596"; pp. 607-619 described the victory emphasising the part played by the Earl of Essex. Essex fell from favour in 1599 and Queen Elizabeth had pp. 607-619 suppressed and the reference on the titlepage removed (see STC 12626a). As pp. 607-619 were at the end of the volume "it was easy to remove them without damage to the makeup of the book, so it was simple to replace them by a reprint. According William Oldys, writing in 1737 'about the middle of the late King's reign [i.e. about 1720], the leaves were reprinted in an eighteenth century 'gothic' type." ('The Hakluyt handbook', ed.
